What is SASSA’s Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant?

The SRD R350 grant was started by the South African Social Security Agency during the COVID-19 for South African citizens, Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and special permit holders between the ages of 18 to 60 years to support them financially.

These are the people, who don’t have sufficient means, who do not receive any other social grant, who do not have any financial support, and unable to fulfil their family’s basic needs. They should not contribute to UIF or NSFAS payments.

SASSA Status Check Expected Results for SRD R350 Grant

The SASSA has shared the possible list of status results along with their meaning and what the client needs to do for that result. When you check the status of any grant, you will get any of those results. Let’s understand it.

Application Complete – This means that the applicant’s application or reapplication process is now complete and the application will be verified each month for the SRD R350 grant before it gets approved. This doesn’t mean that you will receive the payments, you are one step closer to it. You should keep checking the verification and payment status each month.
Bank Details Pending – This status indicates that your SRD application or reapplication has been received by SASSA. However, you did not provide the banking details and also did not select the preferred payment method. To receive the grant successfully, you have to select the payment method either bank transfer or cash send method. For bank transfers, you have to update your banking details on the SASSA portal.
Reapplication Pending – This means that the applicant has not submitted the reapplication for the SRD R350 grant. As the SASSA SRD grant was started during COVID-19, initially it was to be paid for 6 months only. But it has extended many times. So to receive the grant you need to submit a reapplication every month. If you receive this status then go to the SASSA portal and apply.
Period Pending – This status indicates that your reapplication verification is pending for the specific month. Ex. Period January Pending. It means that your application verification is pending for January month. In this case, the applicant should check the status regularly until it gets approved and you get payment dates.
Period Approved – This means that your application for the specific month is approved by SASSA. Ex. ‘period January approved’. It means that your application is verified for January month. The application is approved means you can see the ‘payday’ field. It indicates when you will receive the money. If the payday value is not provided, it means that the payment is not processed yet.
Period Declined – This status means that your application is rejected by SASSA for a specific month. They also provide valid reasons why they declined your application. Ex. ‘period January declined’. It means that your application is declined for January month. If you feel that the reason provided is invalid and you are eligible for the grant, you can submit the request for reconsideration.
SASSA Status Pending – The SASSA Status pending indicates that your application has been received by SASSA, but it’s yet to be reviewed. It will take more time to verify your details. Once the details are approved, the status will be updated. Keep checking it regularly.
SASSA Status Declined – This means that SASSA has declined your SRD grant application as you were not able to fulfil the eligibility criteria. The reason for rejection is also provided.
Identity Verification Failed – This indicates that your details do not match with the DHA (Department of Home Affairs) database. Hence, the identity verification is failed. The applicant needs to provide the correct details to SASSA.
Canceled – This status indicates that your grant is cancelled. If you wish to reinstate your grant then you can do it via the official website.

SASSA Status Check Online For SRD R350 Payment Dates (2023-2024)

The SASSA has not created a specific payment schedule for the SRD grant. The payment dates are not fixed. Generally, the SASSA announce the payment dates for the current month, at the end of the previous month. Ex. The payment dates for January 2024 month will be shared at the end of December 2023.

If you qualify for the grant for a specific month, you will receive the financial aid for that month. How To Check SASSA SRD R350 Grant Status Online?

Even if you submit your SRD grant application, the work is not finished yet. You need to check the application status regularly to know whether your application is approved or not. Also, the payment dates are not fixed, so you need to check regularly. Below I have shared all the methods for SASSA Status check. Choose whichever method you find suitable.

1) Check your SASSA Status from our website

Go to the top of this article and navigate to the SASSA status check form.
Enter your 13-digit SA ID number and registered mobile number.
Click on the “Check Status” button.
Your application status will be displayed on the screen.

2) Check SASSA Status online at srd.sassa.gov.za

Another method to check the grant status online is to visit the official SASSA website. This is the easiest and official way for the SASSA status check. Without any delay or going anywhere, you can get the status update.

Visit the official SASSA SRD status check website https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
After you reach the landing page, Provide your credentials. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the Cell phone number that you used to apply for the SRD grant.
After you enter the credentials, click on the submit button. Your application or payment status will be displayed on the screen.

3) Check SASSA SRD Grant Status via the Moya App

Another method for SASSA status checking online is through the Moya app. For using the Moya app you don’t need any data. Even if your data plan is expired, you can check your grant status in the Moya app. You will need data to download the app, but after installation, you can use it without any data connection.

You can download the Moya app from the Apple App Store or Google Play store, for free. Follow the below steps to check your grant status.

Download and Install the Moya app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store on your smartphone.
Open the application, navigate to the ‘Discovery’ section and click on the ‘SASSA Grant’.
From the menu select ‘SASSA SRD Status’.
Now click on the ‘Application Status’
Enter your credentials like – your SA ID number and registered mobile number. Click on the ‘Submit’ button.
After you click submit, you will redirected to a new screen where your grant status will be displayed.

4) Check SRD Balance Status Through SMS

If you don’t have internet access or don’t know how to use the online way, you can check the grant status by sending an SMS. Follow the next steps to check your SRD status via SMS –

Grab your phone and open the text messaging app.
Type the message as – “SASSA [ID Number]”, and also enter your mobile number. ID number is your 13-digit South African ID.
Send this message to 082 046 8553 via your registered mobile number.
You will receive an SMS response from SASSA with your SRD R350 grant status.

5) SRD Grant Status Check via Call

If you don’t like the online method or any of the above methods and want to verify your grant status by directly interacting with humans then you can use this call method. You just need to call on SASSA helpline number 0800 601 011 to verify your grant approval or payment status. On the call, you will need to provide your SA ID number. So be ready with it.

6) Check SASSA SRD Payment Status 2024 Using Whatsapp

Considering the use and popularity of Whatsapp, the SASSA has also provided a way to check the application status using Whatsapp. Follow the simple steps given below –

Open the phone dialer and save the SASSA phone number 082 046 8553 to your contact list.
Now send the message with the text ‘SASSA’ to the saved contact number.
You will receive a prompt from the SASSA with the options for a status check. Reply to that prompt with the word ‘STATUS’.
You will be prompted for the Application reference number. This is the number that you get when you submit the SRD application. So if you have the application reference number reply “YES”.
Now you will be asked for the mobile number. Provide your registered mobile number.
Also, provide your application reference number.
You will receive a response with your application status.

When and How My SASSA SRD Grant will be paid?

As we saw above, the grant payment dates are not fixed. The SASSA releases the tentative payment dates at the end of the previous month. Before you receive the payment it’s important to see if your application is approved or not. Just check the SASSA application status. If your application is approved, you will find your grant payment date there.

Your grant payment will be directly deposited in your bank account or you will receive it in cash form depending upon your chosen payment method. To receive the money in the bank account, you have to provide the bank details.

You can also receive your grant money in cash from the SASSA post office branches, or SASSA-partnered retail outlets such as Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, and Spar.

If your application is declined by SASSA, they will provide the reason also why your application got rejected. If you think the reason is not valid and you are eligible for an SRD grant, then you can appeal to ITSAA in this matter.
